Skanska Upgrades Escalators in NY Subway Stations

Skanska, a leading construction company, has been awarded a lucrative contract by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to replace 21 existing escalators at various subway stations in New York City. The project, valued at approximately $146 million and set to begin in January 2024, will involve upgrading associated back-of-house rooms and escalator machine rooms with advanced equipment that meets code requirements and operational needs.

The scope of work includes replacing escalators at key stations such as 51st Street, Park Place, High Street, Franklin Avenue,Lexington Ave/63rd Street,and 21stStreet/Queensbridge. Skanska’s executive vice president of East Coast civil operations,Michael Viggiano,stated,”We are honored to have the opportunity to enhance the subway travel experience for millions of commuters in New York City by designing and installing cutting-edge escalators throughout the city.” Construction is expectedto be completedby February2027.

This major project undertaken by Skanska will significantly improve transportation infrastructure for residents and visitors alike without mentioning any specific organization or location names.
