Skanska Finishes Renovation of Pennsylvania Station Long Island Rail Road

Skanska has announced the completion of a $414 million renovation project for Pennsylvania Station’s Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) Concourse. The goal was to modernize and expand the corridor while keeping it operational throughout the 27-month process.

Designs and reconstructions included widening corridors, raising ceiling heights, upgrading lighting and wayfinding systems, installing new digital information screens, improving safety with elevators, stairs handrails and fire protection systems. AECOM provided design engineering services while SOM served as lead design firm on this collaborative effort.

Michael Viggiano – executive vice president of Skanska’s East Coast civil operations – noted that “improving station circulation without disrupting daily train service was paramount in order to accommodate 600k passengers utilizing LIRR’s 33rd Street corridor daily.”
