Skanska, a leading construction company, has successfully completed the restoration and expansion of the renowned Alderman Library at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. The project involved rehabilitating 100,000 square feet of the main library, originally built in 1938, as well as constructing a new six-story concrete addition spanning over 130,000 square feet.
Notable improvements include a new north entrance facing University Avenue and an updated south entrance. Additionally, Skanska restored historic rooms and windows while also enhancing exterior elements. The renovation also provides improved space for humanities and social sciences students along with study courtyards and skylight assemblies.
Mark Balling , executive vice presidentand general manager for Skanska’s North Carolinaand Virginia building operations stated that he is immensely proud of his team for their exceptional work on this historic renovation project. He further added that their meticulous attention to detail and unmatched craftsmanship have made this library one of Virginia’s most dynamic projects.
