Skanska Completes Low-Emission Volvo Excavator Pilot Program

Skanska successfully completed a 90-day pilot program utilizing the Volvo EC230 Electric excavator on the Purple (D Line) Extension Transit Project in Los Angeles. The trial took place at the South Yard of La Brea station and marked one of the first uses of this zero-emissions equipment in North America.

The primary objective was to assess the capabilities of a battery-powered excavator compared to its diesel-powered counterpart for construction work. Specifically, it was used for loading trucks with export construction material from a stockpile.

Preliminary findings show that the Volvo excavator performed effectively, meeting all necessary tasks while maintaining project schedule. Notably, emissions were reduced by 66% (34 kilograms) and cost savings were estimated at 74% per hour ($15.15).

According to Mason Ford, director of sustainability and equipment services for Skanska USA Civil: “We are proud to have partnered with Volvo on this pilot program as it has potential to drive progress towards lower emission practices within our industry.”
