Skanska Completes First Phase of East River Greenway Project

Skanska has successfully completed the first phase of the East River Greenway project in Manhattan, a significant milestone towards the development of a 22-block-long Manhattan Waterfront Greenway. This initial stage includes an in-water structure, a nine-block park, and eco-friendly measures such as GPS-tracked construction barges, timelapse cameras, and underwater drones for inspections. The project also prioritized sustainability by incorporating engineered soil within Silva Cells for stormwater management and implementing geo-zone safety alerts. Additionally, proactive efforts resulted in 31% participation from MWBEs (Minority- and Women-Owned Business Enterprises), surpassing the goal of 17%.

Led by Skanska in partnership with NYC Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC), this initiative aims to enhance New York City’s coastline resilience to climate change while providing accessible spaces for both residents and visitors alike.
