Skanska has completed the construction of the Douglas MacArthur Elementary School in Alexandria, VA, which is the first net-zero-ready school in the Alexandria City Public School system. This 150,000-square-foot facility replaces its former 65,000 square foot predecessor and is designed to produce as much energy as it consumes resulting in lower operating costs. The environmentally friendly building includes features such as a geothermal system for heating and cooling; passive systems that maximize natural daylighting and ventilation; low VOC materials; water saving fixtures; all of which contribute to creating a healthier space for students to learn and thrive.
“The impact of this project will not only provide operational cost savings to the school district but create an improved learning environment,” said Dale Kopnitsky, General Manager & Executive Vice President responsible for Skanska’s Washington D.C Building Operations. This marks an important milestone towards achieving sustainability goals set by both Skanska USA Building Inc., along with those set by local government entities across America today.
