According to a report by the Boston Business Journal, Mayor Michelle Wu’s proposal for a property tax increase will not be brought to the floor of the Massachusetts Senate for discussion. The proposed bill aimed to temporarily raise taxes on commercial landlords in order to limit increases for homeowners and avoid budget cuts.
Recently, State Senators Will Brownsburger and Nick Collins publicly expressed their opposition towards this measure. Both senators represent districts in Boston and cited data from the city showing declines in commercial property values and less significant increases in residential values compared to what was initially suggested by Wu and other city officials earlier this year.
In response, Collins and Brownsberger urged the Boston City Council to introduce new legislation at the State House that would provide funding for tax relief specifically targeted towards seniors living in Boston who may struggle with affording these potential tax hikes.
