Seattle Enacts Law to Promote Office-to-Housing Conversions

Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell has signed a new bill aimed at promoting the conversion of vacant and underused buildings into affordable housing. This measure is designed to make it easier for developers to convert existing commercial structures into residential properties, with the goal of supporting housing development in and around downtown Seattle.

According to Harrell, these changes will provide much-needed flexibility in optimizing the city’s built environment and creating a thriving workplace that also serves as a vibrant community for families from all backgrounds. The proposed legislation includes clear guidelines for residential conversions and offers exemptions from design development standards. Additionally, it aims to reduce conversion costs by exempting them from the City’s Mandatory Housing Affordability (MHA) requirements.

This move by Seattle officials demonstrates their commitment towards addressing the need for more affordable housing options while also promoting economic growth in downtown areas.
