Salk Institute Delays Construction of New $250M Science and Technology Center

The Salk Institute in La Jolla has announced a delay in the construction of their new science and technology center, as reported by the San Diego Union-Tribune. This decision was made due to limited financial resources and a need to prioritize high-impact scientific discoveries.

According to Salk president Jerry Joyce, the institute is currently on track to raise $750 million by June 2026 through their fundraising campaign. However, there have been concerns within the local scientific community about whether they will be able to secure the full $250 million needed for this project.

The center will be named after Qualcomm co-founder Irwin Jacobs and his wife Joan who donated up to $100 million towards its construction. Despite this setback, Salk remains committed towards achieving their goal of advancing groundbreaking research in biomedicine without mentioning specific organizations or locations such as Connect CRE or Connect LA/Texas.
