**Gateway Program Expected to Deliver $445 Billion in Economic Benefits by 2060**
The complete implementation of the 11 projects in the Gateway Program—aimed at modernizing a critical 10-mile stretch of the Northeast Corridor (NEC) passenger rail infrastructure between Newark, New Jersey, and New York City—is projected to generate $445 billion in economic benefits by 2060. This forecast comes from a new analysis released by the Regional Plan Association (RPA).
According to the RPA, the transformative infrastructure initiative will support an average of 46,100 new jobs annually. In its first 15 years of operation, from 2045 to 2060, the Gateway Program is expected to stimulate $230 billion in economic activity within the Tri-State area, along with an additional $170 billion in other parts of the United States. Construction of the program’s core projects alone is estimated to contribute $42.8 billion to the economy.
“With delays and canceled trains, commuters are reminded daily that the majority of the NEC’s current infrastructure hasn’t been replaced in almost a century,” said Kate Slevin, Executive Vice President of RPA. “The projects outlined in the Gateway Program are vital upgrades that advance our infrastructure and environmental agendas, while also providing transit riders with the smooth and reliable commute they deserve.”
The Gateway Program represents one of the most ambitious railway infrastructure investments in the United States, aiming to improve reliability, capacity, and resiliency along this essential transportation corridor.
