Rosalind Brewer Resigns as Walgreens CEO

Walgreen Boots Alliance (WBA) CEO Rosalind Brewer has stepped down, effective immediately. The Deerfield, IL-based pharmacy chain announced Friday that Ginger Graham, lead independent director of the company, will serve as interim CEO.

The reasons for Brewer’s departure are not clear; however WBA stated that both parties had “mutually agreed” on her leaving. Prior to her resignation in October 2021, Brewer and her team began transitioning the company towards a healthcare model. Unfortunately Crain’s Chicago Business reported that this transition hasn’t been successful thus far; WBA’s stock is down 28% year-to-date.
In a statement executive chairman Stefano Pessina expressed his gratitude for all of Brewer’s contributions during such an unprecedented time: “On behalf of the entire Board I would like to thank Roz for her hard work and commitment to our company during this period of change…Roz navigated us through the global pandemic overseeing critical rollout vaccines in Walgreens pharmacies across America while furthering our consumer facing capabilities.”
