Rivian, the electric vehicle start-up, has announced a delay in construction of its Georgia plant. Instead, the company will focus on producing new models at its existing facility in Illinois. This decision is expected to save Rivian $2.5 billion and streamline production processes.
The R2 EV truck is set to launch in the first half of 2026 and with this delay, it could be another two years before production begins at the Georgia site. The initial announcement of this project was met with much excitement as it was hailed as one of Georgia’s biggest economic development projects and a testament to their growing role in the electric vehicle industry.
Originally scheduled for early 2022 groundbreaking, legal challenges regarding incentives offered by California-based Rivian have slowed down progress along with supply chain issues and other manufacturing obstacles.
The news that EV-maker Rivian has put brakes on their planned $5 billion plant in Georgia comes as no surprise given these setbacks but does not diminish their commitment towards expanding operations within North America.
