After more than two years since initial plans were made, repairs to the Tower of the Americas are finally set to begin.
According to a report from the San Antonio Business Journal, the City Council is expected to approve a lease renewal with Landry’s for their Chart House restaurant located at the top of the tower. The project is estimated to cost $19.4 million and will be funded by both parties, with $15.4 million coming from the city and an additional $4 million from Landry’s.
An evaluation conducted in 2020 revealed that numerous upgrades are needed for plumbing, mechanical support systems, fire safety measures and other areas within the tower designed by renowned San Antonio architect O’Neil Ford. While renovations take place, it is anticipated that Chart House will remain open but there may be a two-month closure after work begins in April.
The iconic structure was originally built as part of HemisFair ’68 – San Antonio’s World Fair – and has become an important landmark for visitors and locals alike.
