The Port of Los Angeles and California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) will begin construction this month on a $130 million project to reconfigure the major interchange at State Route 47 (SR 47)/Vincent Thomas Bridge and Front Street/Harbor Boulevard in San Pedro. This project aims to improve travel times, reduce congestion, and enhance safety for motorists and pedestrians at this heavily used roadway junction.
Currently providing access to San Pedro, Wilmington, Terminal Island, and the West Basin Container Terminal, the SR 47/Vincent Thomas Bridge and Front Street/Harbor Boulevard interchange will undergo significant changes as part of this reconfiguration. The existing southbound off-ramp from the Vincent Thomas Bridge will be replaced with a new off-ramp on the north side.
Other improvements include realigning the northbound Interstate 110 connector ramp onto SR-47; modifying both directions of SR-47 ramps onto Harbor Boulevard; as well as modifying both directions of SR-47 ramps towards Terminal Island.
According to Port Executive Director Gene Seroka: “This interchange project is crucial for enhancing traffic safety in our communities while also improving efficiency at our port.” As one of America’s largest ports complexes, it is essential that we continuously maintain our infrastructure – including roadways – in order to meet demand.
