"Razing of Freedmen's Hospital by Howard University"

Howard University has applied for a demolition permit for its three-story College of Nursing and Allied Health Building, also known as Freedmen’s Hospital Annex. The building is located at 516 Bryant St. NW in Washington D.C., according to a report from the Washington Business Journal.

The university’s decision to demolish the building is part of their efforts to make room for a new $650 million, 225-bed Level I trauma center. This project has secured significant funding, including $225 million in tax abatements and $25 million in infrastructure support from the District, as well as a federal grant worth $100 million.

The hospital is expected to be completed by 2027. Along with this development, Howard University plans on investing an additional $785 million into various academic centers such as the Health Sciences Complex, Center for Arts and Communications,and STEM center.
