Project "UC Berkeley Announces New 1,400-Bed Student Housing Project"

The University of California Board of Regents has approved over $7 million in predevelopment funding for a new student housing project at UC Berkeley. This development, located at 2200 Bancroft Way, will add 1,400 beds to the university’s current portfolio. The approval was granted on Thursday and marks another step forward for the university in addressing its limited housing options.

According to the San Francisco Business Times, this funding will cover essential tasks such as site surveys and design work. These efforts are crucial in preparing for future construction on the 0.8-acre property owned by Regents across from UC Berkeley’s southern campus boundary. In fall of 2024, UC Berkeley plans to return to request full budget approval from the Regents.

With an enrollment of approximately 45,000 students and only enough housing for about one-fifth of them (21%), it is clear that there is a pressing need for additional accommodations at UC Berkeley. This latest project joins an existing pipeline with a capacity of around 3,500 beds already under development by the university.
