**Downtown San Jose Net-Zero Initiative Advances with New Data Centers and Housing**
The San Jose City Council has approved the advancement of the first two of three proposed data centers in downtown as part of a transformative initiative between Pacific Gas & Electric Company (PG&E) and real estate developer Westbank. This development marks a significant step toward creating a net-zero community in the heart of Silicon Valley.
The project integrates three planned data centers with 4,000 residential units, all connected through a district energy system designed to provide efficient heat and cooling. This innovative approach aims to set a new standard in sustainability and urban planning.
“The Silicon Valley Initiative is about the evolution of energy, housing and AI infrastructure – it will create a more inspiring and sustainable community that demonstrates leadership globally,” said Westbank CEO Ian Gillespie. “In PG&E and the City of San Jose, we have found collaborators who share our vision and commitment. We’re looking forward to working together to bring this initiative to life.”
PG&E has already commenced infrastructure upgrades to deliver approximately 200 megawatts of power to support the data centers. Meanwhile, Westbank has issued a global call for data center partners, with Eastdil Secured leading the partnership and procurement process.
This initiative aims to establish San Jose as a leader in innovative, environmentally responsible urban development.
