The state of Illinois has announced a plan to invest between $805 million and $935 million in the next three to five years for the reconstruction of two prisons, including Stateville Correctional Center, a historic facility. Governor JB Pritzker revealed that this funding will support the rebuilding of Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln and Stateville, located about 40 miles from Chicago. The new facilities will replace the existing ones at their current sites.
According to estimates by the state, these new prisons are expected to save an average of $34 million annually on operations and maintenance costs. Both Stateville (opened in 1925) and Logan (opened in 1978) have been deemed outdated.
In his statement, Governor Pritzker emphasized their commitment towards improving infrastructure by dedicating capital funds towards these projects. The design and construction process is projected to be completed within three to five years.
