Portland General Electric Secures $150M 75-MW Battery Storage Project to Increase Power Capacity

Portland General Electric Company (PGE) has finalized a $150-million ownership deal for a new 75-megawatt (MW) battery energy storage system known as Evergreen. The facility will be located at a soon-to-be constructed substation in Hillsboro, Oregon.

Mortenson will build the project, which is owned by PGE and expected to begin service in 2024. It adds critical non-emitting dispatchable capacity to the state’s clean energy transition and represents the final procurement from PGE’s 2021 Request For Proposal (RFP). This RFP also resulted in landmark projects such as 400 MW of battery projects recently procured.

Battery systems offer numerous grid benefits including flexibility and stored energy that can be deployed within seconds during extreme weather events or times of high demand. Lithium ion batteries are anticipated to help maintain grid reliability during peak demand while reducing dependence on fossil fuel generation and reliance on external energy markets .
