Port of Long Beach Unveils 400-Acre Wind Facility Plan

The Port of Long Beach has unveiled plans for a $4.7-billion floating offshore wind facility, Pier Wind, to help California and the nation reach renewable energy targets in the coming decades. The project would be the largest facility at any U.S. seaport specifically designed to accommodate assembly of offshore wind turbines and is expected to span up to 400 acres of newly built land located southwest of the Long Beach International Gateway Bridge within its Harbor District when completed in 2035.

“As society transitions to clean energy, our harbor is ideally situated for such an enterprise – with calm seas behind a federal breakwater, one of the deepest and widest channels in America, direct access to open ocean waters and no air height restrictions,” said Port Executive Director Mario Cordero. Construction could potentially start as early as January 2027 pending approval from local authorities
