Port Freeport Expansion Completed: McCarthy Wraps Up $146M Project

McCarthy Building Companies has completed construction of Berth 8 at Port Freeport, Texas. Part of the Velasco Terminal, Berth 8 features over 925 feet of berth and an associated roll-on/roll-off dock extension. The expansion represents the single largest project built by a public port on the Texas Gulf Coast and was initiated in 2020 with substantial completion achieved recently for a total cost of $146 million.

The scope included demolition of an existing concrete relieving platform, dry excavation, combi-wall bulkhead installation and construction of new wharf pilings – totaling 1,400 steel piles installed throughout the project’s duration.
Port Freeport is situated 60 miles south from downtown Houston in Brazoria County’s industrial hub area offering ample land for development along with access through roadways or railway as well as having one shortest deepwater channels on all coasts within Texas state lines.
