POAH Commences $13M Suburban Senior Center Renovation

POAH, a nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving affordable housing, has recently commenced a $13 million renovation project for two senior buildings in Harvey. The Chicago Business Journal reported that the buildings, located at 166 and 174 W. 151st Street and known as the Jesse L. Jackson Jr. Senior Center, will undergo extensive upgrades.

In 2019, POAH acquired these properties as part of a larger portfolio consisting of six buildings and totaling 461 units from the YMCA of Metro Chicago. This portfolio also includes another senior housing property in Harvey called South Suburban Senior Housing which underwent $15 million worth of renovations last year and is currently at an impressive occupancy rate of 98%. Funding for this project will be provided through tax-exempt bonds and low-income housing tax credits (LIHTC) issued by the Illinois Housing Development Authority.

The general contractor for this project is Ujamaa Construction based in Chicago while Canopy Architecture serves as the design firm. Property management services will be handled by POAH Communities who also manages other properties under POAH’s ownership such as Jackson Park Terrace apartments with its total unit count reaching up to318 units, and Island Terrace Apartments with its total unit count reaching up to240 units.

This latest development marks yet another step towards fulfilling POAH’s mission to provide quality affordable housing options for seniors across various communities without compromising on their comfort or well-being.
