**3,000 Apartments Proposed for Former Flushing Airport Site in Queens**
New York City Mayor Eric Adams has announced a major redevelopment plan to transform the long-dormant site of the former Flushing Airport in College Point, Queens, into a new residential and public space project. The proposal aims to deliver approximately 3,000 housing units along with 60 acres of public space.
The development, led by Cirrus Workforce Housing and LCOR Incorporated, is scheduled to begin construction in 2028.
This initiative follows an executive order issued by Mayor Adams in 2023, directing city agencies to identify city-owned sites suitable for new housing. In response, the New York City Economic Development Corporation conducted a competitive Request for Proposals (RFP) process to select a developer for the site.
“For too many decades, this valuable land has sat vacant, but our administration said it was time to change that,” said Mayor Adams. “We issued a landmark executive order to build housing on city-owned sites like this one and now, we are excited to announce we will create around 3,000 new homes at the site of the former Flushing Airport.”
The former Flushing Airport has been unused since its closure in 1984. This redevelopment project represents a key step in Adams’ broader plan to tackle the city’s housing shortage by utilizing underused public lands.
