Pierce County Approves $12.2M to Fund Affordable Housing Projects

The Pierce County Council has approved $12.2 million in funding for four affordable housing projects that will result in the creation or preservation of 646 housing units for individuals and families in the region.

This investment is funded through tax revenue generated by the Maureen Howard Affordable Housing Act. Since its implementation just over two years ago, the act has supported the development or preservation of 1,387 units of affordable housing. The latest round of projects builds on the progress of earlier efforts, such as Copper Way in Spanaway and Viridian Grove in Tacoma.

The new funding will support the following projects:

– **Cedar Flats (South Hill/Frederickson):** Awarded $7 million to construct 276 new family-sized units, featuring two- to four-bedroom apartments.
– **Chateau Rainier (Fife):** Granted $5 million for the rehabilitation of 248 existing units to maintain long-term affordability.
– **FFC Homes XIV (Buckley):** Allocated $166,800 for the acquisition and rehabilitation of three group homes.
– **Fairway at Dupont:** Set to receive $69,752 for the new construction of 113 affordable family-sized units near Joint Base Lewis-McChord.

These projects aim to address the growing need for affordable housing across Pierce County and ensure continued access to safe and stable living environments for local residents.
