Pennrose, The Cloud Company and the Borough of Naugatuck, CT have marked the opening of Platform at Naugatuck, the first phase of a planned multi-phase redevelopment on Old Firehouse Road. The project is rising on a previously vacant, seven-acre parcel, converting underutilized land into new residential and commercial space in the borough.
The initial phase delivers 60 apartments alongside approximately 3,000 square feet of ground-floor commercial space. According to the development team, the new residences are positioned as high-quality, affordable homes intended to serve families in Naugatuck. The commercial component is designed to activate the street level and support neighborhood-serving uses, while residents also gain access to on-site amenities tailored to the community.
Describing the significance of the opening, Karmen Cheung, regional vice president at Pennrose, noted that the site had long remained a vacant lot before its current transformation. She characterized Platform at Naugatuck as providing affordable housing options for local families and framed the project as the first milestone in a broader effort to reshape the borough’s downtown area.
Platform at Naugatuck is part of a three-phase redevelopment vision for the Old Firehouse Road site. When fully built out, the master plan calls for a total of 180 mixed-income apartments distributed across three 60-unit buildings. The future phases are expected to expand both the residential offerings and the commercial footprint on the site.
In addition to the housing and commercial components, the full site plan incorporates new public green space intended to enhance the pedestrian environment. Plans call for a market plaza, central lawn and gardens, providing outdoor gathering areas that are designed to serve residents of the property as well as the broader Naugatuck community. These elements aim to integrate the development into the surrounding urban fabric while creating new public realm amenities.
With the ribbon cutting on the first phase now complete, Platform at Naugatuck moves from concept to an operating community, signaling progress on the larger downtown redevelopment plan. The initial delivery of apartments and ground-floor commercial space establishes the foundation for subsequent phases and sets a benchmark for how the remainder of the seven-acre site may be built out over time.
