"Owner of S. Miami Mall Seeks Extensive Renovation"

The owners of the Shops at Sunset Place in South Miami have proposed a major redevelopment plan for the mostly vacant mall. The project, led by Federal Realty Investment Trust, Grass River Property and The Comras Company and designed by Zyscovich Architects (photo), will be considered by South Miami’s Planning Board.

Originally opened in 1999, the current Shops at Sunset Place features approximately 524,180 square feet of retail space along with a movie theater, 40 apartments and some office space. However, it has been underperforming in recent years.

The new development is simply called “Sunset Place” and would encompass an impressive total of 1.47 million square feet. It would include over 1,500 residential units as well as a hotel with 287 rooms. Additionally, there are plans for a large theater with seating for up to 1
