The San Diego Union Tribune reported that Cornerstone Communities received unanimous approval from city planners for their Otay Mesa project, which will feature 450 townhouses. Located in one of the few remaining undeveloped areas in San Diego County, the Candlelight project is just a mile away from the U.S.-Mexico border. Despite previous approval, changes to unit types required a new vote.
Environmental concerns and mitigation plans have kept this project in planning stages for approximately 12 years. However, with last Thursday’s vote, Cornerstone expects to begin construction on the site by September and open its first homes by late 2025.
According to Cornerstone CEO Ure Kretowicz as quoted by The San Diego Union Tribune , this development aims to provide workforce housing with townhouse prices estimated at mid-$500Ks to low $600Ks range – even its highest-priced models would be below January’s median home price of $802,500.
This long-awaited milestone marks significant progress for the Otay Mesa Project after years of planning efforts.
