Construction has begun on a new housing project for Oregon State University’s Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, Oregon. The $16.5 million development, led by Mackenzie Inc. and O’Brien-Lucas Ventures, will consist of 77 units and span 34,000 square feet.
The housing complex will feature a mix of studio-style units and two-bedroom apartments to accommodate both short-term and long-term stays. It is located about three-quarters of a mile from the Hatfield campus on Southeast 40th Street in South Newport.
Mackenzie is serving as the project architect for this multi-faceted development that includes architecture, interiors, civil engineering, structural engineering, and landscape architecture services. O’Brien-Lucas Ventures is acting as the general contractor through their joint venture partnership between O’Brien Construction and Lucas Design-Build.
This new housing facility will support various individuals involved with Hatfield Marine Science Center including students taking classes or conducting research projects at the center, faculty researchers, instructors, and teaching assistants.Additionally,it will also provide accommodations for visiting researchersand other mission partners associated with OSU.
Innovative construction methods are being incorporated into this project, such as utilizing modular panelization techniques. The building design allows for prefabricated modules to be produced offsite by Freres Engineered Wood,a local manufacturer. These panels can then be assembled onsite, resulting in an efficient construction process while promoting sustainable practices within the industry. This exciting development marks another step forward towards enhancing OSU’s presence at Hatfield Marine Science Center.
