Oregon Receives $500M for Rose Quarter Improvement Project

Portland’s Lower Albina neighborhood is set to receive a significant boost with the announcement of nearly $500 million in federal grants. Led by Congressman Earl Blumenauer, Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, Congresswoman Bonamici, and Mayor Ted Wheeler, this investment will revitalize the area and transform 94 acres into a vibrant mixed-use community.

The U.S. Department of Transportation has allocated $450 million for the construction of a highway cover over I-5 that will reconnect Lower Albina. An additional $38.4 million in federal funding will support the redesign of Broadway and Weidler Street within the neighborhood as part of The Albina Vision – an ambitious redevelopment plan focused on restoring this historically Black community that was disrupted by past infrastructure projects.

This major project marks an important step towards revitalizing Portland’s neighborhoods while also promoting sustainable urban design principles.
