Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey announced on Friday that agreements have been made in principle to transfer operations at four Steward hospitals – Saint Anne’s Hospital, Good Samaritan Medical Center, the Holy Family Hospitals and Morton Hospital – to new owners. In addition, the Healey-Driscoll administration plans to use eminent domain to take control of Saint Elizabeth’s Medical Center in Boston’s Brighton neighborhood and facilitate its transition under a new owner.
Pending finalization of these deals, Lawrence General Hospital will become the operator for both campuses of Holy Family in Haverhill and Methuen. Lifespan will assume operations at Morton and Saint Anne’s while Boston Medical Center will take over Good Samaritan as well as Saint Elizabeth’s after it is acquired through eminent domain.
To support these transitions, the Healey-Driscoll administration has collaborated with state legislators to create a financing plan that includes cash advances, capital support and maximizing federal funding opportunities. These actions do not affect Carney or Nashoba Valley hospitals which are set for closure after failing to receive qualified bids.
