NYCEDC: Record Number of Private-Sector Jobs in the City

According to the first-ever “State of the New York City Economy” report from NYCEDC, there has been a surge in private-sector jobs (4,151,400 annual average) and a record high labor force participation rate of 62.8% as of September 2024. This highlights the city’s growing economy and diversification over the past decade.

While New York City remains a major global financial capital with an increase of 21,500 finance jobs since before the pandemic, there has also been significant growth in other sectors such as technology, life sciences, healthcare and green industries. This has led to more diverse opportunities for high-growth and middle- or high-wage jobs within the city.

However, the report also addresses challenges facing NYC’s economy including housing affordability. The number of new jobs created between 2011 and 2023 far exceeds new housing units built by more than double. To combat this issue,NYC is implementing policies like their “City Of Yes for Housing Opportunity” plan.

In summary, the latest data from NYCEDC shows that New York City is experiencing record-breaking numbers in terms of job growth, and while facing economic challenges,it continues to take steps towards creating a thriving economy for all its residents through strategic plans like their affordable housing initiative.
