New York is seeking a construction firm to undertake a $120 million renovation project for the historic Lexington Avenue Armory, home to the New York National Guard’s 69th Regiment. Governor Kathy Hochul has announced plans for the renovation, which will include replacing mechanical, electric, and plumbing systems as well as making accessibility upgrades and other interior improvements. The design work has been completed by Marvel, an architecture firm based in New York.
The state will cover approximately 25% of the costs while the federal government will contribute $90 million. The Beaux Arts design of Lexington Avenue Armory sets it apart from other active armories in Manhattan. While many have been repurposed into cultural centers or community facilities, this armory remains a military readiness center. By mid-August, the state intends to select a winning bidder for this project’s renovation without mentioning any specific names such as “Connect” or “Connect CRE.”
