Nordstrom has announced plans to close its 312,000-square-foot department store at the Westfield San Francisco Centre in August due to changing dynamics downtown. The Seattle-based retailer will also shutter its 45,496-square foot Nordstrom Rack store across the street at 901 Market St. on July 1, ending a 35 year presence in downtown San Francisco. Both leases are nearing their current terms with no option for renewal.
In a message to employees affected by the closures, chief stores officer Jamie Nordstrom wrote that customer foot traffic had decreased significantly over recent years and impacted their ability to operate successfully. In order better serve customers from around Bay Area region they have decided focus on their 16 other locations as well as ecommerce sales instead of renewing either lease agreement .
