Next Phase of Revamped Oregon State Capitol Construction

Construction is currently underway at the Oregon State Capitol, with a focus on completing the slab foundation. This crucial foundation, made up of 13,000 yards of poured concrete, will provide stability and support for the historic building constructed in 1938. According to a report by Statesman Journal , this project is part of a $465 million overhaul aimed at updating and repairing Salem’s aging capitol building and grounds.

A recent report highlighted structural concerns that needed to be addressed in order to prepare for potential seismic activity and major earthquakes. The latest phase of construction began in 2022 and is expected to be completed by January 2025.

Phases I and II have already been completed as part of this extensive project which included updates to mechanical systems, electrical systems, plumbing infrastructure as well as addressing seismic concerns. Phase III focuses on strengthening the dome structure built in 1938 while also upgrading sound systems and elevators throughout the property.

The revamped Oregon State Capitol has entered its next phase with ongoing construction efforts aiming towards completion within three years’ time.
