Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion (HUC) has announced its plans to relocate to a historic building, the First Battery Armory at 56 W. 66th St., on Manhattan’s Upper West Side by 2027. The college purchased the property for $32 million after selling its Greenwich Village campus to New York University for $75.5 million, according to the New York Business Journal.
According to Rabbi David Adelson, dean of HUC’s New York campus, this move will allow the college to become more involved with local institutions and strengthen collaborations with nearby seminaries and synagogues while maintaining relationships with NYU and others.
The new building is a landmarked armory that has been updated with modern systems by its previous owner. It will be reconfigured by HUC to include state-of-the-art technology and infrastructure for both in-person and hybrid learning. Additionally, it will feature a library, beit midrash (study hall), as well as spaces for prayer services, community events, and exhibitions.
