The MTA has announced a request for proposals (RFP) to begin the initial engineering phase of the Interborough Express (IBX) light rail project. This 14-mile project will connect Brooklyn and Queens and is expected to take two years to complete.
With a budget of $5.5 billion, this project aims to improve transportation in these two boroughs by connecting them with 17 subway lines, 51 bus routes, and the Long Island Rail Road at East New York Station. The MTA has made changes to the proposed route in order to increase efficiency.
Accordingly, Janno Lieber, chair and CEO of MTA stated that more than five million people residing in Brooklyn and Queens need an easier way for commuting between these two boroughs for work or education purposes as well as exploring all that NYC has on offer. IBX is designed precisely keeping this requirement in mind.
