Mortenson and WWU Top Off on Zero Carbon Academic Facility

Mortenson, in collaboration with Western Washington University, Perkins&Will, Coughlin Porter Lundeen and other project partners, has successfully completed the mass timber structure of the first carbon net-neutral collegiate facility in the region – Kaiser Borsari Hall.

The four-story Electrical Engineering and Computer Science building is constructed using sustainable Glulam beams to meet the Zero Carbon and Zero Energy Certifications set by International Living Future Institute. The use of on-site energy generation and storage has resulted in a remarkable 63% reduction in embodied carbon as well as achieving a 100% reduction in operational carbon.

According to Michael Harder, vice president and general manager of Mortenson’s Seattle office: “As we push boundaries with mass timber construction techniques, we are not just constructing a facility; we are creating a sustainable legacy for future generations. The incorporation of mass timber highlights our collective dedication towards building with minimal impact on our planet.”
