Mortenson, in collaboration with Western Washington University, Perkins&Will, Coughlin Porter Lundeen and other project partners, has successfully completed the mass timber structure for the first carbon net-neutral collegiate facility in the region – Kaiser Borsari Hall.
The four-story Electrical Engineering and Computer Science building is constructed using sustainable Glulam beams to meet International Living Future Institute’s Zero Carbon and Zero Energy Certifications. With on-site energy generation and storage capabilities, it will achieve a 63% reduction in embodied carbon footprint and 100% reduction in operational carbon emissions.
According to Michael Harder, Vice President & General Manager of Mortenson’s Seattle office: “As we reach new heights with mass timber construction methods, we are not just creating a facility; we are leaving behind a sustainable legacy for future generations. The use of mass timber showcases our collective dedication towards building with minimal impact on our planet.”
This achievement marks another milestone for Mortenson as they continue their commitment towards environmentally responsible construction practices.
