For over 17 years, Michael Stevens has been leading the Capitol Riverfront Business Improvement District. Washington Business Journal recently reported that he plans to step down from his role in September.
The business district is currently searching for a successor who will begin working alongside Stevens in August. During his tenure, the area has seen dramatic transformation from an underutilized Anacostia waterfront into one of DC’s most densely developed mixed-use areas with a daytime workforce of 36,000 and more than 18,600 residents.
“I went to the board and said ‘Optimally I should be working myself out of a job’,” Stevens told WBJ as he turns 69 this July. He also plans on continuing teaching at Georgetown University while engaging in volunteer activities such as consulting work for downtown redevelopment efforts and travel around the world which was delayed due to COVID-19 restrictions..
