Bob Broeksmit, president and CEO of the Mortgage Bankers Association (MBA), restated the association’s support for establishing a National Housing Director. In his prepared remarks at the MBA’s 2024 Annual Convention and Expo on Monday, Broeksmit emphasized that this position would be solely dedicated to housing policy and would oversee all policies from various agencies while identifying any conflicting regulations.
This is not a new stance for Broeksmit, as he previously expressed his support for this concept at a meeting of the Exchequer Club in May 2024. With just days before the general election, he reiterated his support despite predicting that there will likely be “divided government” with one party controlling at least one chamber of Congress.
Broeksmit believes that regardless of which party wins the presidency, there will still be opportunities for MBA in 2025. He stated on Monday that both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have acknowledged the need to address rising housing prices and increase affordable options for both purchasing and renting homes. The post concludes by reaffirming MBA’s call for a National Housing Director.
