Seattle Mayor Bruce Harrell recently signed the Maritime and Industrial Strategy into law following its unanimous passage by the City Council. This package of legislation is a major update to industrial land use policy in decades, estimated to create 35,000 new jobs and 3,000 new homes over 20 years.
The updates include three new industrial zones: maritime, manufacturing and logistics; industry and innovation; as well as urban industrial. Other strategies involve collaboration with stakeholders for freight transportation improvements, establishing a citywide organization for business advocacy/stewardship in maritime/industrial sectors plus adoption of subarea plans for Ballard-Interbay-Northend & Greater Duwamish Maritime Industrial Centers.
This One Seattle approach strengthens land protections while taking advantage of opportunities for housing & jobs within evolving industries – ultimately protecting & growing this critical economic cornerstone of our city!
