Mayor Backs Potential MLB Ballpark in Portland, Oregon

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler is demonstrating his support for the Portland Diamond Project’s latest proposal to convert the struggling Lloyd Center Mall into a Major League Baseball stadium. According to The Oregonian/OregonLive, Mayor Wheeler and his staff are exploring various ways of bolstering the plans.

For years, this group has been striving to bring America’s beloved pastime to Oregon’s largest city. Their ambition is not only about bringing a team and ballpark but also creating jobs, developing workforce housing, and driving economic opportunities in Portland.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred recently placed Portland on a short list of cities that could receive an MLB team if/when league expansion reaches 32 teams. After previous sites such as Zidell Yards, Terminals 1 & 2 (the former central post office), as well as Portland Public Schools’ headquarters were deemed unsuitable locations; Lloyd Center has emerged at the forefront of potential venues for this project’s realization.
