The success of large developments near major sports venues has been undeniable. With a variety of bars, restaurants, retail stores and apartments now surrounding more than a dozen professional sports arenas and stadiums, it’s no surprise that Raleigh is eager to join in on the trend.
Recently, the city received a rezoning request for what is being called the Raleigh Sports and Entertainment District. This $1 billion development plan was proposed by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon with hopes to revamp the former PNC Arena. According to reports from The Raleigh Business Journal, this ambitious proposal includes four subdistricts spanning over 4,000 residential units as well as up to 3 million square feet of non-residential space such as hotels. Additionally, there are plans for building heights reaching up to 40 stories along with parking decks and open spaces designed for entertainment purposes including dining areas and an enhanced tailgating experience.
One particular subdistrict known as “Entertainment” covers approximately 27 acres situated between Lenovo Center and Carter-Finley Stadium while another area seeking rezoning approval spans across 12 acres along Edwards Mill Road where developers hope to reach heights of up to forty stories.
Leading this project is Gale Force Sports & Entertainment – parent company of Carolina Hurricanes – who have high hopes for creating an impressive stadium-area entertainment district that will attract visitors from all around.
