The success of large developments near major sports venues is undeniable. With the addition of bars, restaurants, retail shops, and apartments surrounding more than a dozen professional arenas and stadiums, these areas have become thriving hubs. And now Raleigh wants to join in on the action.
Recently, a rezoning request was submitted for the Raleigh Sports and Entertainment District with plans for a $1 billion development around the former PNC Arena. This ambitious project is being spearheaded by Carolina Hurricanes owner Tom Dundon. According to reports from The Raleigh Business Journal , this proposal includes four subdistricts spanning 4,000 residential units and up to 3 million square feet of non-residential space such as hotels. The buildings are expected to reach heights of up to 40 stories with amenities like parking decks, open spaces for recreation or events, and various entertainment options including dining experiences that will enhance tailgating activities.
One particular subdistrict known as “Entertainment” covers an impressive 27 acres situated between two popular venues – Lenovo Center and Carter-Finley Stadium. The rezoning request also seeks approval for building heights reaching up to 40 stories within its designated area along Edwards Mill Road.
Leading this exciting venture is Gale Force Sports & Entertainment – parent company of the Carolina Hurricanes organization. This highly anticipated project has been dubbed “Hurricanes Eyeing Major Stadium-Area Entertainment District,” accordingto Connect CRE .
