Construction has been completed on the two towers of 1 Java Street, a joint venture between Lendlease and Aware Super, one of Australia’s largest superannuation funds. Located along Brooklyn’s Greenpoint waterfront, the towers stand at 37 and 20 stories tall. Upon its expected completion in 2026, this development will be New York State’s largest residential geothermal building with a total of 834 units.
According to the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA), this project will also be one of the largest geothermal residential buildings in the United States. The use of a vertical closed-loop geoexchange system is projected to reduce annual carbon emissions from heating and cooling by an impressive 53% compared to typical residential systems.
Lendlease reports that as an all-electric building, residents at 1 Java Street can expect to avoid carbon emissions associated with natural gas usage. Monique Henley, executive general manager for East Coast development at Lendlease stated that “With this project we are setting a new standard for next-generation multifamily living by offering high-quality mixed-income housing that is fully electric and powered by geothermal energy.”
