"Leading in the Current Environment: Insights from Skanska's Clare De Briere"

In the wake of our successful Leading in Tough Times series this past summer, industry leaders were asked by Connect CRE for their insights on navigating the current business climate. Clare De Briere, Executive Vice President at Skanska in Los Angeles, shares her thoughts on effective leadership and identifying future leaders.

Q: How do you define strong leadership in today’s environment?

A: In today’s fast-paced world, effective leadership means being supportive and adaptable while also providing clear direction and achievable goals. A great leader trusts their team, makes themselves available to listen and communicate effectively without being authoritarian. I enjoy acting as a sounding board for my team and seeing them have that “aha” moment when they come up with a brilliant idea. By stepping back and giving room for growth opportunities within the team, I empower them to develop into future leaders themselves.

Q: How do you anticipate having to adapt your approach to leading by 2024?

A: At my core values as a leader will remain unchanged by 2024. However, last year presented unprecedented challenges for the commercial real estate industry which required us all to step outside of our comfort zones and take on new roles or responsibilities within our teams. Moving forward from this experience,I plan to focus more heavily on fostering flexibility among my team membersand encouraging themto embrace learning opportunities with enthusiasm. However, the fundamental aspects of my leadership style – listening, supporting, guiding, and teaching – will not change.

Q: What qualities do you look for when identifying potential future leaders within your organization?

A: It isn’t always about who is most vocal or assertive; it’s about finding those individuals who ask thought-provoking questions that challenge traditional ways of thinking. They are willingto roll up their sleevesand contribute wherever needed. They think strategically, collaboratively, and proactively rather than simply reacting. The ones who go outoftheir wayto help colleagues strugglingwith somethingarealso highly valued. At Skanska, we have a comprehensive training and workshop program in place to nurture these qualities and develop the next generation of leaders within our organization.

Q: What advice do you offer to rising stars within your company?

A: Drive and determination are crucial for success in this industry. My advice is to never be afraid to ask questions or take on new challenges. Protect your reputation by always acting with integrity.Seek out mentors who can guide you along the way,and listenand learn from those who have more experience than you while also seeking ways to improve upon past practices. There will inevitably be obstacles, but how an exceptional employee responds during difficult times speaks volumes about their potential as a leader.
