Katy-based Academy Sports + Outdoors (“Academy”), full-line sporting goods and outdoor recreation retailer, is continuing its expansion efforts with the goal of opening 13 – 15 stores this year. The company plans to open a total of 120 to 140 new stores by the end of 2027, creating 10,000 jobs in the process.
Originally Katy founded in 1938 as a family business in Texas, Academy has grown to 269 stores across 18 states. Houston alone has 11 locations while 107 are located throughout Texas overall. The average store spans 70,000 square feet and generates approximately $25 million in sales annually through key categories such as outdoor apparel & footwear; sports & recreation; and leading national brands alongside private label offerings.
