New York City has recovered 99.4% of private sector jobs lost during the pandemic, though the recovery has been uneven across key industries, according to an analysis by New York State Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli. The securities, transportation and warehousing, and office sectors have seen strength in job recovery while other industries such as retail, restaurants, construction and tourism continue to lag behind the national rate of recovery.
The arts entertainment and recreation sector has only regained 85% of pre-pandemic jobs while restaurants have recovered 95.5%. Retailers are at 87.4%, with tourism still nearly 15% below pre-pandemic levels; meanwhile construction is yet to regain 8%. The securities industry experienced fluctuations but continues showing growth overall despite this setback from COVID-19’s economic impact on NYC businesses .
