The Indiana University (IU) Foundation has announced its plans to purchase a property in Washington, D.C. from Johns Hopkins University. The eight-story building located at 1619 Mass Ave. NW will serve as housing for approximately 40 students, as well as house classrooms and offices. IU is currently in the process of finalizing the purchase of this 59,000-square-foot property that was put up for sale last year when Johns Hopkins consolidated its operations along Pennsylvania Avenue.
According to reports from the Washington Business Journal, this building is one of three properties that were listed for sale by John Hopkins and managed by Cushman & Wakefield – including 1717 and 1740 Massachusetts Ave. This acquisition will further expand IU’s presence in D.C., which already includes programs such as the Washington, D.C Advancement Center at 1455 Pennsylvania Avenue and O’Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs.
Both IU and Johns Hopkins have presented their proposed plans for the campus to Dupont Circle Advisory Neighborhood Commission; however approvals are still pending before any official announcements can be made regarding this project. Once all necessary approvals are secured, IU intends on filing applications with zoning commission followed by a public hearing process.
