**Illinois Passes Legislation to Lift Ban on Large Nuclear Plants**
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has signed the Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act (CRGA), a significant legislative move aimed at accelerating the state’s transition to clean energy. The new law promotes the development of battery storage, renewable energy sources such as wind and solar, and enhances energy efficiency programs. Most notably, it lifts the longstanding ban on constructing new, large-scale nuclear power plants in the state.
The CRGA is designed to modernize Illinois’ energy grid by expanding clean energy initiatives and ensuring that a portion of the funding supports low-income communities. The law underscores a commitment to affordability and reliability while balancing the transition to greener energy.
“In Illinois, we are pursuing every available option to produce affordable, efficient, clean, and abundant energy,” said Governor Pritzker. “The Clean and Reliable Grid Affordability Act sets a national standard in the effort to lower energy costs and marks a historic step forward in our clean energy vision.”
The new legislation also addresses recent national slowdowns and project cancellations in the wind and solar sectors by providing a clearer path for clean energy development. While the state had previously ended its ban on smaller, next-generation modular nuclear reactors, this bill goes further by removing restrictions on traditional large-scale nuclear facilities.
